The Mouse With The Out Numbered Tale

"High Guys,it all started to get serious when BB, looked on the Hat Site, years ago and saw an illustration of a French Soldier up to no good with a yellow strip down his trousers. Well he just had to paint a few hundred up,and all the while not really knowing if they were a Silver Shilling Right or a Half Penny Wrong. I happened along today because BB,always has a bright need for me while gathering reflections of long ago smokey days, and a few taps on me his Mouse, and there it was a grand sight of two French Soldiers, and a stripe down the leg of one of  e`m."

"This reminded me  his little Mouse, that is. Of when BB,was heavy into hard graft making tree`s for Hougoumont,a mere fly spec on the map near  another called Waterloo. Anyway with hundreds of tree`s all around the house he decides to fudge out a few toy soldiers and started to play with his camera. Click, click,Click!    As always things seem always to expand, yes get larger when BB,gets to fudging out this that and the others.   Soon a story was developing within his Toy Top Noggin of a Head.   It went like this, and it was called, Out Numbered."

Out Numbered
1815 Hougoumont

"Opp`s! Where did they spring from?"

"There`s to many of E`m Lofty."____________" Your right, but here goes number one."

The shot went way off mark due to the sudden appearance of more of these Yellow Legged running fellows. "More of the blighters Sid. Come on lets leg it."____"Where to Lofty? The Wood is heaving with e`m."______ "The Haystack! Come on Run."
As these two race across the cabbage patch, with balls whizzing near enough to nip theirs ears off. Private Clay is already firing into the French from the top of the Haystack. Sid,and Lofty, are a running hell for leather, but this is a muddy patch of ground that`s for certain and the harder they tried a running the slower and slower they became.Their boots were caged up with the stuff. Oddly enough the French were now not wasting shot upon two guys running away, and the whizzing musket balls where in fact coming from more friendly  fire,as more of the Guards Lt Company took up positions near that huge Haystack.

As more and more French  filtered out of the wooded area to the front of Hougoumont, they were far more concerned with assaulting  the wall. As the first haphazard shots rang out from wall the French readied themselves with the advance across the vegetable garden.

Meanwhile the two heavy booted out of breath fellows finally dived for cover behind the Giant Haystack. Heavily out numbered they too would join in the fight for this place.      Soon as the fight increased with the French everywhere they would fall back with the others along the dirt track leading to the back gate of Hougoumont. As they did so they left Private Clay who was still firing from the top of the Haystack.

Meanwhile the French busied themselves knocking on the Main Gate!

Although Sid and Lofty are fictitious fellows, private Clay was not. In the first few rounds at defending his spot he shot many a Frenchman advancing toward the front of Hougoumont. Soon the Haystack was a fire. Red flame could be seen from inside Hougoumont.  As for Private Clay he managed his escape by sliding butt down it,and upon reaching the ground he realised he was alone.

The French were advancing, the rolling volley fire from both sides and the smoke from the Haystack combined made it confusing to say the least.
He began to leg it along the dirt track, and was one of the last in through the open back gate of  Hougoumont. Moments later the French pushed their way through the gates and into the Farmyard.  A very close call would happen next.

"Well, there we have it Guys. The stripes down the legs, and The end of Out Numbered.
